Delegation Led by H.E. Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam Paid Visit to SCMC
On the afternoon of September 11, 2024, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Brunei, H.E. Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong, accompanied by Mr. Duan Nonggen, Director of Bureau of International Cooperation of the Supreme People’s Court of the People’s Republic of China, and Ms. Li Shulan, Member of the Trial Commission of Shanghai High People’s Court, paid a visit to Shanghai Commercial Mediation Center (hereinafter referred to as the “SCMC”). Ms. Zhang Wei, Director of SCMC, Mr. Chen Naiwei, Vice Chairman of SCMC, Mr. Zhu Hongchao, Deputy Director of SCMC, and Ms. Li Haige, Deputy Director of SCMC, received the visitors and had a discussion with them.
Chief Justice H.E. Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong is the first native Chinese judge in Brunei. H.E. Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong became the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Brunei in 2018 and was awarded the highest honorary decoration of “ Dato Seri Paduka” by the Sultan of Brunei and the Head of State in 2019. As one of the first signatories to United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation, Brunei attaches great importance to the construction of international commercial mediation mechanisms. Chief Justice H.E. Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong was cordially received by Zhang Jun, President of the Supreme People’s Court. The visit to SCMC aims at learning about the practical achievements of the diversified dispute resolution mechanism with Chinese characteristics.
After listening to the introduction of the work of SCMC, Chief Justice H.E. Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong highly appreciated the achievements of SCMC in the area of diversified dispute resolution, and expressed his hope that the visit would serve as an opportunity to strengthen communication with SCMC, deepen exchanges and mutual understanding in the professional fields, and carry out practical cooperation, so as to inject more impetus into the high-quality construction of the Belt and Road Initiative between the two countries, and also expressed his encouragement and support for the future development of SCMC.
Chief Justice H.E. Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong was accompanied by Hajah Hazarena binti POKSJ DP Haji Hurairah, Acting Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Brunei, Hajah Noor Amalina binti DP Haji Alaihuddin, Senior Registrar of the Supreme Court of Brunei and Kamaliah Fadhilah binti Haji Ibrahim, Senior Registrar of the Supreme Court of Brunei. Relevant leaders of the Supreme People’s Court and Shanghai High People’s Court also participated in the reception.
