SCMC Tokyo Service Station successfully held a training event on Sino-Japanese mediation practices

To help Chinese-funded enterprises in Japan resolve cross-border disputes efficiently, the Shanghai Overseas Intellectual Property Tokyo Service Station (SCMC Tokyo Service Station) successfully held a Sino-Japanese mediation practice training event at the Tokyo office of King & Wood Mallesons on February 17, 2025. Mediation experts from the Shanghai Commercial Mediation Center (SCMC) and the Japan International Mediation Center (JIMC) participated in the event and shared their insights.

Ms. Zhang Wei, Director of SCMC, gave a systematic introduction to the commercial mediation practices in China, and she particularly emphasized the positive role of effective participation by attorneys and legal counsels in commercial mediation.

Mr. Chen Naiwei, Vice President of SCMC, gave a detailed interpretation of the Singapore Convention on Mediation and called for more global momentum for the development of international commercial mediation.

Mr. Chen Tianhua, head of the Tokyo Service Station of SCMC, shared his insights into the unique advantages of commercial mediation and encouraged legal practitioners to explore diversified dispute resolution methods.

In the context of Japan's ratification of the Singapore Convention on Mediation in 2023 and the enactment of corresponding implementing legislation, Mr. Yoshihiro Takatori of the Japan International Mediation Center highlighted Japan's helpful initiatives to actively promote the development of international commercial mediation.

Nearly 30 professionals from China and Japan, including lawyers, in-house counsels, representatives of financial institutions, and heads of chambers of commerce attended the event. During the Q&A session, the participants had an in-depth discussion on the specific application of commercial mediation.

In the future, SCMC will hold more similar events at other overseas service stations to promote the innovation and popularity of commercial mediation mechanisms and safeguard the stable development of Chinese enterprises in overseas markets.
